Campaigns

Our public service announcements encourage Alaskans to join in in preventing domestic and sexual violence in Alaska. The focus of our ad series is to let Alaskans know that help is available to both victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and to those who perpetrate violence. The series also calls attention both men’s roles in stopping domestic violence and sexual assault in our state and to youth prevention efforts.

When I Am An Elder: A World Without Violence

When I am an Elder is the latest addition to a number of public service announcements, posters, and materials developed with youth committed to creating a better world and standing up and speaking up to end violence. The television spots are based on a poem, called "When I'm an Elder" created and written by Bethel Teens Acting Against Violence (TAAV) in 2002. TAAV youth have added and changed lines over the years, slowly making "When I'm an Elder" a powerful collective creation. The two 30 second public service announcements featured here are a hybrid of ideas from youth in Kipnuk, Kwethluk, Napaskiak, and Bethel who attended Teens Lead Ahead camp hosted by the Tundra Women's Coalition (TWC), ONC, and Association of Village Council Presidents. They identify a collective vision for a world without violence and a world that includes the things we cherish most.

Through funding from the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and support from the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence, these tv spots will be aired across Alaska.  With enthusiasm from the original authors, we move into the second phase of this project, filming When I am an Elder in two more regions within Alaska, providing an opportunity for Alaskan youth to envision and create communities without violence within this generation.
