Public Policy

The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault is a non-profit, statewide membership organization committed to eliminating domestic violence, sexual assault, teen dating violence and stalking against all Alaskans. The Policy Program is an integral part of this effort by working in conjunction with other Network projects: training, prevention, and legal advocacy; our member programs; state agencies; state and federal policy makers; and other key partners to ensure that laws and policies are supportive of and enhance the safety of victims, survivors and their families.

Giving Survivors a Voice at the State Legislature

Improving the law is one important tool for addressing the needs of victims and survivors. ANDVSA provides a voice at the Alaska State Legislature responding to legislation and educating legislators on the intended and unintended consequences for victims and survivors of proposed legislation. We research and analyze possible legislation, examine practices and policies being used throughout Alaska and how these issues have been addressed in other states. In addition to legislation, agency regulations are continuously monitored and reviewed for their impact on our member programs and the people that they serve.

State Budget Priorities

ANDVSA works with our membership to ensure that Alaska has a strong network of services that provide critical resources to meet the needs of sexual assault and domestic violence survivors and their families. Along with Network member programs, we educate and inform the Alaska State Legislature and Governor’s Office about financial resources that are needed so that DVSA programs can adequately provide shelter, advocacy, and other crucial support services to the victims and survivors they serve.

Federal Policy

ANDVSA also advocates for victim-centered public policy on the federal level. We actively engage with the Alaska congressional delegation to advocate for federal policies that provide legal protections and funding. For example, the success of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Family Violence Prevention and Services Act depend on our continued advocacy.
