Catholic Diocese starts massive outreach for abuse victims. KUAC in Fairbanks reports that the diocese, which has declared bankruptcy, wants the word out on a deadline for victims of sexual abuse to bring forward their case. That date is Dec. 2. To that end, it has placed notices in newspapers and electronic media across the state and into the Pacific Northwest.
The diocese is trying to assess its financial standing for payouts to victims. At issue is whether an insurance company, CNA, which insured the diocese during periods when abuse may have taken place, will contribute to retributions. The diocese has taken the insurance company to court.
The Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims was created in 2005 in response to the need of sexual violence centers in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Fund has developed into an ongoing fund that accepts donations to assist victims and programs whenever disaster occurs. The money going to these programs comes from the Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims, a collaborative initiative of five national anti-sexual violence organizations. The NSVRC serves as principle administrator of the Fund.
The viability of the fund requires ongoing donations. Anyone wishing to contribute should go to www.relieffundforsexualassaultvictims.org. Member organizations of the fund include, the NSVRC, the National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Violence (SCESA), the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV), the National Sexual Assault Coalition Resource Sharing Project (RSP) and the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN).

National Relief Fund for Rape Crisis Centers
At 2 PM on Wednesday July 30, 2008, Karen Baker, Director of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), will present checks to three Iowa centers impacted by recent flooding. The presentation will take place in Cedar Rapids at the Waypoint program, 318 5th Street SE.
The money going to these programs comes from the Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims, a collaborative initiative of five national anti-sexual violence organizations. The NSVRC serves as principle administrator of the Fund.
Ms. Bakers’ visit will focus attention on the fact that disasters can be particularly devastating to victims and victim assistance programs. She will present checks to three Iowa programs: the Cedar Valley Friends of the Family in Waverly, the Riverview Center in Dubuque, and Waypoint in Cedar Rapids.
Elizabeth Barnhill, Executive Director of the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault said “the needs of victims of sexual violence do not stop in the midst of natural disasters such as the recent Iowa floods. Victims already coping with the trauma of sexual violence are now faced with the day to day trauma of loss of housing and employment. Additionally those who are supporting victims are coping with their own personal and community flood-related losses.”
Ms. Baker noted “the devastation of recent flooding in the Midwest underscores the ongoing need to maintain the Relief Fund.” She explained that 100 percent of donations to the fund go to affected communities.
