Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault: Train the Trainer Curriculum for Advocates

Instructor Overview

The ANDVSA Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Basic Training Curriculum for Advocates is designed for advocates who provide training on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault issues within their local community. The curriculum is designed to be flexible and offer a variety of options.

Training Goals

The primary training goal of this curriculum is to increase awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault issues and to provide tools for advocates to provide competent basic training in their community.

Training Objectives

Curriculum objectives include increased competency and comfort levels for advocates providing training to local service providers addressing the impact of domestic violence and sexual assault issues in their community. Objectives also include increased practical skills such as screening, interviewing, safety planning, documentation and referral.

Training Philosophy

The ANDVSA basic curriculum philosophy is one of inclusion.  The curriculum stresses partnership.  Advocates and local service providers provide community training together for concerned groups within their local community.

Training Team

The training team models partnership by forming a mutually beneficial and well defined working relationship.  Sharing mutual goals, the training team works together against domestic violence and sexual assault for better safety, health outcomes and wellness within their local community and across the state.

The following is the role of each team member:
The community based victim advocate provides expertise on the root causes or etiology of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault as well as information detailing how a community’s response to DV/SA impacts victims and their children.   Advocates will also provide practical assistance to participants including safety planning tips, local resources and options, and available legal remedies. The local community service provider assumes the primary role in discussing DV/SA Identification and Intervention.  Providers will address prevalence data and deliver technical training pertaining to provider cues and intervention within their sphere of the community.
